Texas Hill Country Wine Trail is home to 25 wineries located between Austin and Fredericksburg.

The Texas Hill Country Viticultural Area

The Texas Hill Country AVA was established by the US government in 1991. This viticultural area covers 15,000 square miles. Some of the grapes grown in this area of Texas include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Syrah, Malbec, Grenache, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Shiraz, Muscat Blanc, Merlot, Touriga Nacional, Blanc du Bois, Black Spanish, and Mourvedre. Blanc du Bois and Black Spanish grapes are resistant to Pearce’s Disease.

Texas Hill Country Wineries

Texas Hill Country is a delightful area of the country for the beauty of the landscape. In addition, the twenty-five wineries on the Texas Hill Country Wine Trail provide a wonderful welcome to visitors and wine enthusiasts. The landscape during the spring is filled with an abundance of wildflowers including the bluebonnets that are the state’s flower and Indian paintbrush.

Fredericksburg Area Wineries

Eight wineries are located near Fredericksburg, Texas and several are easy to drive to from the city. These wineries include Frederickburg Winery, Chisolm Trail Winery, Grape Creek Vineyard, Rancho Ponte Vineyard, Torre di Pietra Vineyards, Wood Rose Winery, Becker Vineyards, and Pedernales Cellars. This small city was established by German settlers in the mid 1800’s and named after Prince Frederick. While traveling the streets, one will see reminders of the German heritage including restaurants with German dishes.

Fredericksburg is a good base for anyone intending to visit Texas Hill Country wineries. Numerous wineries are within minutes of Fredericksburg. This small city offers a selection of lodging sites. Accommodations include bed and breakfasts, hotels, motels, extending stay lodging, RV parks, and campgrounds.

Marble Falls Area Wineries

Marble Falls is also an excellent location for lodging if one is intending to visit wineries in the northern area of Texas Hill Country. Marble Falls is located on the Colorado River between San Antonio and Austin. The city was founded in 1887. Easy to reach wineries include Spicewood Vineyards, Flat Creek Estate, Lost Creek Vineyard, Stone House Vineyard, and Fall Creek Vineyards. Lodging in Marble Falls includes camping and RV Parking, bed and breakfasts, resorts, and hotels.

Wine Trail Events

The Texas Hill Country Wine Trails plans five events each year. Tickets are limited to 100 passes. Most events require a ticket and sell out in advance. A season pass is available. This pass provides the lowest price and includes a 20 percent discount over the individual price of each trail event. Trail events during the year include the Wine Lovers Trail (February), Wine & Wildflower Trail (April), Harvest Wine Trail (August), Texas Wine Month Trail (October), and the Holiday Wine Trail (December).
